Russian Recording I helped my friend and fellow web designer Lane Fujita implement this site redesign for a Chicago recording studio. The site is built on his own PHP / MySQL CMS. The first step was to 'AJAX-ify' all internal links using jQuery BBQ, then create the MP3 player in HTML / CSS / PHP / SoundManager2. All javascript features were implemented as a 'progressive enhancement' to ensure that the site will remain properly indexed and maintain Google pagerank. Isak & Inger AJAX based mini-site for my friend Mariel's Fall 2011 Lookbook. Simple, intuitive mouse & keyboard navigation, jQuery BBQ for deep-linking support, and an extremely minimal design were employed to get the site online and fully functional in a matter of hours.View site in new window -
mentallyeel.org Bizarre 1-bit blog styled after the Macintosh Classic. A standard for my school board through the primary grades, this was the computer I was ‘learned’ on.View site in new window
Tasked with creating a quirky monochrome theme for the blog, and inspired by the heroic Amiga Workbench javascript emulation at chiptune.com, a Macintosh System 7 theme began to take shape in my mind. I first created the share icons, using each social site’s favicon.ico as a reference. Next came converting the original System 7 fonts to work with the javascript font rendering engine Cufon. Since the source fonts are bitmap, not vector, I used an online tool called Pxfon to handle the conversion. Images of the character sets were screen-captured from Mini vMac, a System 7 emulator running on Windows. Icon and title-bar images were based on screen captures as well. Finally, the popular jQuery library was used for window behaviours.

Action Makes Recorded as live as possible, as loud as possible, and as late at night as possible, the Action Makes sessions really pushed the party limits of Sleepytown Sound. Hooded Fang – Album Nominated for the 2011 Polaris Music Prize! Daniel Lee (Hooded Fang frontman) recorded and mixed this album at his home studio, so my mastering was the band's only production cost - one that paid off handily with several licensing deals and a glowing review in the Toronto Star. Parker Abbott Piano Duo I met Simeon Abbott while playing in Metal Kites. This piano duo release from Teri Parker and Simeon was a joy to work on due to the excellent acoustics and pianos at The Music Gallery, where it was recorded live to multitrack. Simeon, Teri, and I mixed this together over two days at Unichord. I enjoyed working with the stereo images of two keyboard instruments. Mike Kuehn – IGPGAGU Whimsical, dramatic, tragic lyrics set to novel melodies and backed by a solid groove - power pop! I put a lot of work into this album, recording it largely myself in the final days of Sleepytown, but never made any copies of it. Gentleman Reg – Heavy Head EP Singer / songwriter Reg Vermue's 2009 release of B-sides, covers, and remixes on Arts & Crafts. This was one of the first albums I mastered at Unichord - before the console had even been finished! -
Clara Engel – Secret Beasts Recorded almost entirely live including lead vocals at Sleepytown Sound. Clara and her fans loved the performances that this method brought out, although it was a bit tricky engineering-wise! An Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail reverb pedal was used for the live mix, and was then augmented with stereo reverb in the final mix. Clara lives in Montreal right now, but you can often catch her doing shows in Toronto and New York. Hear more and buy on Bandcamp. Snowman’s Land (Feature Film) German writer-director Tomasz Thompson came across the music of the Born Ruffians while on internet radio. Soon, he had commissioned an original score by frontman Luke Lalonde and travelled to Toronto to oversee the production. This was my first recording project at Angle's Up, a cozy garage studio near my house. Luke spent a few days multitracking original parts - I played drums on one track - and soon we had a number of themes to work with. We also re-edited stems from Red, Yellow, and Blue to create instrumental mixes. At the end of the week, Tomasz returned to Germany with a near-finished film score. -
Maylee Todd – Choose Your Own Adventure I first met Maylee when she was performing with Henri Faberge & the Adorables in 2006. Her solo project, which we produced together at Sleepytown in late 2008-2009, has a distinctly gentler feel but is no less quirky or fun.Bed tracks were recorded live-off-the-floor, with harp, vocals, and vibraphone dubbed soon after. Maylee spent several weeks doing more overdubs at home, and we reconvened to mix. Finally the album was mastered by Ryan Mills and released in 2010 by Do Right Music. Since then she's done several music videos promoting the album, lent her voice to Telus ads, and toured Europe with Janelle Monae.Buy it on Bandcamp.View site in new window -

We recorded most of this over two days at a studio in the Junction, acoustic guitar and vocals live off the floor, and then did some violin, banjo and vocal overdubs in my living room. I was midway through building the Unichord studio at that point, having just closed Sleepytown in the spring, so this project marks the transition. -

sleepytownsound.com (2008) The second studio website, redone primarily in HTML rather than Flash for SEO. My partner and I designed it together at the studio, and aimed to capture the 'maturing, but still fun' vibe of the time. I took the panorama photo and soon realized that the actual walls of each room would make great background for the body text, and extend the feel of the studio into the site. I reused the flash 'cassette' mp3 player from the previous website, but added annotations. The 'recording cat' image was composed of a cat poster on the studio wall, with our actual vocal microphone positioned in front. :)View site in new window
More than a few times my clients mentioned how they enjoyed seeing the image from the 'Map' page in Warden station en-route to the studio - I think for regular clients and for me especially, this site felt like 'home'. Other features include an online rate calculator with example budgets, a photo collage of our microphone collection, detailed equipment and discography pages. -

It Won’t Be Long (Short Film) Jazz trio (upright bass, drumset, and upright piano) recorded live to accompany a short film by Daniel Warth. Several moods based around one melodic theme were recorded in a matter of hours at Angle's Up, and mixed shortly thereafter at Unichord. -

The Big City Nights Band – Carry Me Ontario Danny (BCN) had recorded this album himself, but wasn't totally happy with the result. We spent a half day adding hi-fi rhythm guitars to some of the songs, and in tradition with the other BCN albums I've worked on, I quickly laid down the missing bass line for "That Evil Beat".
